Rites of Passage: Vasilisa the Brave and Baba Yaga

Sometimes the doors blow open…and sometimes the fires go out..

What do you do in times like these? Huddle in the cold? That’s an option…

Or do you venture into the forest to find a spark, a flame to rekindle your fire?

Look for the old cottage bathed in dirt, clucking and scratching. Can you find your way? You who journey to the in between places.

I hear her cackling in the night. Streaks of Red. Streaks of White.

Dark as midnight. Fierce as fire. Grandmother. Shrouded in mystery outside of time.

Bowl shaped shadows her mortar flying high, her pestle aching to grind.

Here comes Baba Yaga. What bargain will you strike?

We invite you to brave the mystery of Baba Yaga, and earn the spirit fire

In this Reclaiming core class we move between the realms of myth, identity, and dreams to initiate our own transformation. Traditionally, Rites of Passage are ceremonies marking a turning point, milestone, or life transition (ex. from child to adult, marriage ceremony, death rite). Unfortunately, our hyper productivity focused society has lost connection to the great spiritual mysteries and the mythic framework that give a sense of meaning to life. This class is a powerful way to create a meaningful Rite of Passage for oneself and re-emerge into the waking world after the life-altering journey of the past year.

We will focus on mythopoetic truths by deepening a relationship with the story “Vasalisa the Brave” and the deities and mysterious ones we meet therein. With assistance from those deities, and aided by storytelling trance, release work, and dreams, we will receive our challenge(s), meet our helpers, work through our blocks, and emerge reborn. In particular, this class takes advanced approaches to traditional Rite of Passage explorations such as dream and story, and works with techniques and optional discussions to deepen attendees’ experience of trance facilitation. The class culminates with a rite of passage ritual honoring the journey the students have taken throughout the class.

Reclaiming Tradition Core Classes

Elements of Magic

Each class is structured as a ritual and includes practical ritual and magical skills. Elements of Magic allows us to explore these skills in a supportive group setting. This class is a great way to connect with other people exploring Reclaiming-tradition magic and witchcraft.

We welcome both beginning students and advanced students who want to deepen their experience of the sacred elements.

Prerequisite: Reading of the first six chapters of The Spiral Dance by Starhawk.

Iron Pentacle

Using our magical skills, moving and shaping energy, transforming ourselves through trance to explore the five points of our inner pentacle: Sex (primal energy), Self, Passion, Pride (self-esteem), and Power (effectiveness in the worlds). Six classes (or weekend intensive), culminating with a ritual created by the students. Learn more about the Iron Pentacle in the Reclaiming Quarterly.

Prerequisite: Elements of Magic class or equivalent.

Pearl Pentacle

We will work with the deep, healing energies of the Pentacle of Pearl, moving through the five points: Love, Law, Wisdom, Power, and Knowledge. Learn more about the Pearl Pentacle in the Reclaiming Quarterly.

Prerequisite: Elements of Magic class or equivalent.

Rites of Passage

Rites of Passage focuses on dreams, myths, and language, using traditional and non-traditional tales and techniques to create a personal rite of passage. Through storytelling, trance, release work, and dreams we receive our challenge(s), meet our helpers, work through our blocks and emerge renewed, reborn. Six classes (or weekend intensive), culminating with a ritual created by the students.

Prerequisite: Elements of Magic class or equivalent.

Pentacle of Community

In this class, we weave magic to open ourselves to the wisdom of the being that is community. We work with the five points of our pentacle of interdependence: Collaboration, Honour, Common Good, Empowerment, and Service. Six classes (or weekend intensive), culminating with a ritual created by the students.

Prerequisite: Elements of Magic and either Iron Pentacle or Pearl Pentacle.

Sliding Scale

At Reclaiming LA, we’ve chosen to offer a sliding scale fee to make it easier for more students to participate in our classes by paying what they can afford. We also have scholarships available for students who need additional assistance. It is up to each student to self-assess their ability to pay.
